Jackson's Garden in Schenectady, NY

The history of Jackson's Garden begins with its founder, Dr. Frederick Augustus Jackson. Dr. Jackson was an early settler in Schenectady who, in the early 1800s, purchased land on which he would eventually create his own garden. There the soil was rich, and the land was abundant with the wooded area that had been part of the original settlement. Dr. Jackson's plans for the garden were grand and something that took years to come together. He was a botanist and was very knowledgeable in the study of plants. His vision was to have a Garden that contained a variety of flowers, trees, and shrubs for each season of the year. He carefully planned out the Garden and included a wide range of species from both North American and European origins. Jackson's Garden is known for its mix of evergreens, perennials, and annuals that create a beautiful landscape, with many of the plants included either grown from seed or taken from his travels. The main attraction is the evergreen rows or hedges that provide a backdrop for the lush and colorful annuals and perennials.
